Arlene Fiore is the Peter H. Stone & Paola Malanotte Stone Professor of atmospheric chemistry in the Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She has over two decades of experience using observations and Earth system models to investigate processes shaping regional and global air pollution and public health.

HAQAST Project: New urban-to-global viewpoints on air pollution for public policy and health applications

By probing the information content of satellite products (TEMPO and TROPOMI column HCHO, tropospheric column NO2 and TEMPO lower tropospheric ozone partial columns), together with suborbital measurements and Earth system models, Arlene’s team aims to develop new applications of satellite products for inferring ozone transport and urban-to-regional formation chemistry. The proposed expansion of an existing public-facing visualization platform to include multiple air pollution datasets will facilitate both qualitative and quantitative study of co-exposure to multiple stressors across different sectors by a broad set of organizations.

Project goals / deliverables:

  1. Characterize early season (April-June) 2024 high-ozone events over the northeastern United States Ozone Transport Region and place them in the context of the past two decades.
  2. Advance understanding of the role of transported versus locally produced ozone and precursors along rural-to-urban gradients over the northeastern United States when smoke is present.
  3. Assess regional-to-global co-exposure to multiple air pollutants with meteorological hazards.
