Headshot of Pawan Gupta

Dr. Pawan Gupta has more than two decades of experience in the fundamentals of satellite remote sensing, developing and validating retrieval algorithms for aerosols and other pollutants, and applying earth observations to address various air quality and climate science and application challenges. Dr. Gupta also co-leads NASA’s AErosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET) program, overseeing atmospheric aerosol measurements from over 600 ground stations worldwide. In the past Dr. Gupta led the NASA’s Applied Remote Sensing Training (ARSET) Air Quality Training program (2010-2023), training over 15,000 end users from more than 160 countries and over 1500 organizations.

HAQAST Project: Integrating NASA satellite data, model outputs and research into U.S. State Department’s Environmental Diplomacy Efforts in Africa

Pawan’s team will collaborate with established partners through the Department of State (i.e., diplomatic missions and embassies) to build local technical expertise and establish an enhanced data system serving multiple African countries. The team will develop the online data visualization and analytical tool called the “African Air Quality Explorer (AAQE).” The AAQE will be a comprehensive online African air quality monitoring and forecasting platform powered by NASA data and research. It will address the current gap in air quality monitoring data and visualization systems for African countries and cities, offering historical data, near-real-time (NRT) satellite data, and air pollution forecasts, with easy-to-use tools for analysis.

Project goals / deliverables:

1) Develop an online data visualization and analytical tool called the “African Air Quality Explorer (AAQE).”

2) Engage governmental, public, and private environmental agencies on various aspects of air quality through training and workshops.
