Headshot of Tracey Hollow

Tracey Holloway is a professor at the University of Wisconsin—Madison, jointly appointed in the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies and the Department of Atmospheric and Ocean Sciences. She is an air quality scientist, working at the intersection of air quality, energy, climate, and public health. Tracey Holloway brings nearly 25 years’ experience leading interdisciplinary science organizations, including serving her third term as HAQAST Leader (2016-Present; Deputy Lead 2012-2016), elected member of the Board of Trustees of UCAR (2023-present), co-founding and serving as first President of the Earth Science Women’s Network (ESWN 2002-2017), and Director of the Nelson Enterprise, a new business engagement initiative in the Nelson Institute. She is recognized as a Member of the National Academy of Medicine, a recipient of the AGU Ascent Award and the UW-Madison Slesinger Award for Excellence in Faculty Mentoring.

HAQAST Project: Advancing Satellite Data for Health and Air Quality Management Across Scales

Tracey’s team seeks to deliver applied research successes, highly responsive to end-user needs, and translate successes into user-friendly resources. One aim will focus on characterizing the spatial and temporal patterns of high pollution levels in monitored versus unmonitored locations. The other aim will evaluate the emissions and air quality impacts of a voluntary vessel speed reduction program in coastal California. Across the projects, she will use TROPOMI, TEMPO, and PACE data, and the WRF, CMAQ, and AERMOD models.

With these continuing and new initiatives, this project aims to maximize the societal benefit of NASA investments in air quality and health data.

Project goals / deliverables:

  • Monitor siting and plume behavior to capture pollution hot-spots relevant to health and air management.
  • Evaluate the “Blue Whales, Blue Skies” air quality impacts on California

Co-investigators and partners: David Frisbey (Monterey Bay Air Resources District), Holly Galbreath (Ventura County Air Pollution Control District), Dr. Barron Henderson (US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)), Jessica Morten (NOAA Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary and the California Marine Sanctuary Foundation), Andy Mutziger (San Luis Obispo County Air Pollution Control District), David Vitse (Outrider Foundation)
