Jingqiu Mao is an Associate Professor at University of Alaska Fairbanks. His research is aimed at understanding the evolution in time and space of the trace gas and aerosol composition of the atmosphere, with a combination of field measurements, global modeling and satellite observations.

HAQAST Project: Exceptional events on air quality and public health at northern high latitudes

Jingqiu’s team will provide actionable insights for Alaskan stakeholders, including improving air quality forecasting during wildfire season and identifying dust events across the state for better documentation of exceptional events. This project will use new tools including the fast-growing surface network with low-cost sensors, EPA AirNow network, AERONET, TROPOMI products, high resolution regional air quality forecast models and machine learning techniques.

Project goals / deliverables:

  1. Improve air quality forecast in Alaska during wildfire season
  2. Identify dust events across the state of Alaska for better documenting these exceptional events at a state level
