Chris Uejio is a professor of geography and public health at Florida State University. He has 19 years of experience working on extreme heat, multiple exposures, health and risks, project management, and co-producing health adaptations with government leaders.

HAQAST Project: Scaling Earth Observations to Co-Produce Heat Knowledge and Adaptations

Chris’s project will advance the state of urban heat island mapping science and co-produce knowledge with local governments to expedite the development of extreme heat action plans. The team will improve understanding of multi-aspect extreme heat patterns and their local drivers at the community scale, map hyperlocal (1 m) human-scale heat exposure with urban morphology and biometeorological variables derived from satellites, and investigate the alignment between city/county heat adaptations, vulnerability, and adverse health outcomes.

Project goals / deliverables:

  1. Understand the multi-aspect extreme heat patterns and their local drivers at the community scale
  2. Mapping hyperlocal (1 m) human-scale heat exposure by integrating fine-level 3D urban morphology and biometeorological variables derived from satellites.
  3. Co-develop maps of heat vulnerabilities or adaptations to improve health risks and inform public policy
