HAQAST Project: Scaling Earth Observations to Co-Produce Heat Knowledge and Adaptations
Chris’s project will advance the state of urban heat island mapping science and co-produce knowledge with local governments to expedite the development of extreme heat action plans. The team will improve understanding of multi-aspect extreme heat patterns and their local drivers at the community scale, map hyperlocal (1 m) human-scale heat exposure with urban morphology and biometeorological variables derived from satellites, and investigate the alignment between city/county heat adaptations, vulnerability, and adverse health outcomes.
Project goals / deliverables:
- Understand the multi-aspect extreme heat patterns and their local drivers at the community scale
- Mapping hyperlocal (1 m) human-scale heat exposure by integrating fine-level 3D urban morphology and biometeorological variables derived from satellites.
- Co-develop maps of heat vulnerabilities or adaptations to improve health risks and inform public policy
Co-investigators and Partners: Meg Jamison (Southeast Sustainability Directors Network), Casi Callaway (Southeast Sustainability Directors Network), Leiqiu Hu (University of Alabama-Huntsville), Xiaojiang Li (University of Pennsylvania)
